Red Tailed Cockatoo Population Survey - Wimmera, May 2020

  • 2 May 2020 is the survey date for the red Tail Black Cockatoo annual survey. This is an ongoing project, and has been for some time. They would like our assistance with counting numbers of Birds. The South Eastern variety is listed as endangered on the threatened species list.
  • The meeting point is generally the Friday night at Casterton, where we will be briefed and allocated areas. Although, given our location I am hoping we can be allocated something like Little Desert/Big Desert area and maybe stay at the Little Desert Lodge. Little Desert Lodge is now owned and operated as a commercial venture by a local Nhill family.
  • Please put this date in your Diary. Should be a good camp out/social weekend.
  • Bruce and David will shortly be going to Horsham to discuss an associated project with Greening Australia. They are managing conservation reserves owned by Bank Australia at Edenhope, which is a prominent part of the Red Tail’s range. There may be tasks similar to Nanya for removel of redundant fencing etc. More information to come.
  • A third part of the project may be assistance with Stringybark and Buloke seed monitoring. A project to map where Stringybark and Buloke trees grow and are likely to seed. These trees are the favourite food for the Red Tails. There might also be an opportunity to assist with future revegetation projects.
