Barry Mountains Track Work with Parks Victoria

Image

This year, we have been asked to assist the Bright Office of Parks Victoria with some late season track inspections and chainsaw work, prior to the official opening of the tracks on October 31.

For this reason, the trip is being requested as a mid-week trip since the opening date is a Friday.

The trip details are as follows:

  • Dates are Monday 28 October (transit) Tuesday 29 October through to Thursday 31 October inclusive
  • Location will be the Barry Mountains area south of Abbeyard.
  • Trip Logistics
    • Travel up to Myrtleford on Monday pm and then down to Abbeyard where we camp.
    • Tuesday will be track inspections in company with the Parks Victoria Ranger, Rob Hemsworth
    • Wednesday will be a repeat of Tuesday
    • Thursday will be transit back to Melbourne as the tracks are opened on that day.
  • Equipment required will be:
    • All camping gear, water, food and provisions for two nights in alpine country
    • Capable 4WD vehicle for alpine fire track navigation
    • Basic vehicle recovery gear - strap, shovel, tyre pump, repair kit, shackles and hand winch if you have it.
    • Handheld UHF radio and/or vehicle mounted UHF.
  • Chainsaw Certificate - but if you don't have one, please still attend as the logs will need rolling and there is plenty more to be done apart from operating a chainsaw!
